What is your definition of success? People look at success differently. For some it is having material things. For others success is a spiritual thing. Surveys of rich people show they are no happier as a group than anyone else. We have all heard the saying, “Money doesn’t bring happiness.” But, It sure can make it possible to live your dreams.

I suggest that happiness is not a destination but a journey. You can be happy for moment. You just got a new car. Or you can be happy in your journey through life. Knowing you are on course to achieve the important goals in your life means you know your mission in life. People who know their purpose live a longer, happier more productive life.
Get in touch with your gut feelings. The catch word of the day is “Mindfulness.” It means you know what you feel about what you are doing. Our feelings and what we value in life guide our journey through life. It is our mission that makes life worth living. What legacy do you want to leave to your children?
Success is knowing you are on track to achieve those things in life that are important to you. The key to success is working on the right thing at the right time. You have to block out time every day to work on the most important thing in your life. How much time you can spend working on the important things in your life depends on how many urgent things impact your life. If you are not achieving your important goals fast enough you are going to have to learn to say “NO.” Don’t let the urgent things imposed on you by others prevent you from working on your important goals.
You must be sure you are working on the most important thing in your life at this particular moment.

The Problem

Part of the problem is deciding what is the most important thing we need to work on. The important things in our lives are a shifting target. We have responsibilities to our family, to our work and to our church to name a few.
The other part of the problem is how we work.
I’ve been reading a lot about productivity lately. Some say you can overcome procrastination by being sure you know what is important in your life and working on the “one important thing” consistently every day. Most recommend you plan to spend 15-30 minutes every day working on your one most important thing. By working on your most important goal a little bit every day you may make sure the important things do not get neglected. The problem is 30 minutes a day may not meet your deadline. The 30 minute a day technique works when you have important goals that tend to get pushed into the background and forgotten. Studies have shown that authors who work on their project consistently everyday get more done than authors who wait till they have time to work on their project.

Productive authors know how long it will take for them to write 5000 words. They set a deadline and know they have to plan to write for a specific amount of time every day.

I find I work best in 60-90 minute increments. When I get into the flow of writing, I don’t want to stop. However, I start getting groggy after an hour and a half or so. Then I have to get up and walk around, work in the yard, ride my bike or even take a nap. Then I can pick up where I left off and spend another 90 minutes working on my important thing. Psychologists call this sprint work. They say research has found that most people have cycles where they have high energy for 90 minutes followed by 20 of recuperating.
My daughter is an author and a website developer. When she gets started she may work all night with barely a break. I think Psychologists may call that being obsessive, but the point is pay attention to what works for you and take advantage of your bodies ups and down. Everyone is different. You need to get in touch with your feelings to know you are working on the right thing and at the right time
When you are totally immersed in what you are doing you are in the flow.” and you do not want to break the flow of creative energy
When you understand you body rhythms make a habit of doing you creative work when you are at your peak energy.

Our attitude

Most people live re-actively. They are satisfied with their life. If they are creative at all they settle for a hobby they work at their spare time.
If you want to make a difference, understand you values. Get in touch with how you feel about what you are doing. Is self doubt holding you back? Your values and feeling should guide you dreams. Think about what important thing you want to accomplish. What do you want to have accomplished  in 10 years. Turn you dreams into goals by setting deadline on you goals and breaking the goal down into small measurable tasks you can check off as you accomplish them.
Most people look at their goals and how unattainable they seem and get discouraged. They are living in the GAP between where they are and where they want to be. It is better to live in the now. Look at where you were 5 years ago and compare that to where you are now and you will see positive progress and real accomplishment. I want to be a successful internet marketer. I have yet to make a profit. If I look forward to the day my business is creating $50K per month passive income my goal seems unattainable. However, five years ago I new nothing about building a website. Today I can build a website and I know how to promote it. I have the confidence to build websites for others and I know more about promoting products on line that most people. I have put together the pieces and expect to be producing $2K/mo profit by the end of the year.
It is kind of a cup half full, cup half empty kind of thing. If you have the negative point of view you will never try. If you are positive the sky is the limited.

The key to success is knowing what is important in your life and working on the right thing at the right time. People with a written plan accomplish far more than those who leave their ideas floating around in their head.

When you review your day how do you feel about what you accomplished. Research shows that those who live purposeful lives live longer, happier more productive lives. what do you want your legacy to be?

It is up to us to make sure we use our time here on earth for good purposes. Do you know why you get up in the morning? What one most important thing are you going to do today?

Most of us do what we have to do and never think about what is important to us. Our life is routine and imposed on us by others. We go to work and do what the boss tells us. We come home, play with the kids, watch TV and go to bed. We do what we have to do.

Our life slips through our fingers like the sands of time. We let others control our lives, but is that our destiny?

Are personal core values important in our lives? It is a question worth asking, yet most people never think about what they value most in their lives. If honesty and loyalty are important to you, you are not going to cheat on your wife. If making money is your most important value you will follow The Art of the Deal.

Most people never think about their values. Their values influence them at a subconscious level. Often they will make decisions that are inconsistent with their values. If you value honest and take a job that requires you to lie you you are going to be stressed.

When you bring your values to your consciousness you will make better decisions and you will have a better life. Think about what you value most in your life. Make your personal values list and refer to it often. When you know what you value most in life your purpose will become clear. Research has shown people who live life with purpose live a longer, better life.

Do you value your freedom, your independence, your friends? Your values determine how you live your life. You can drift or you can paddle. I prefer to take control of my life and live with purpose. I want to help you live with passion in a world of peace, harmony and opportunity.

Successful people know what is important in their lives. They set goals that will help them accomplish their mission. They break their goals down into small tasks that can be accomplished in a short time. Then they focus on working on the one thing that is most important in their lives and completing a small task every day till they have achieved their goal. Then they set new goals and continue to pursue their calling.

Goal setting is vital if you want to live your life with purpose. What is living with a purpose?

I encourage you to clearly understand you values. If you believe honesty, loyalty and compassion are important values in your life, you are not going to take a job where you have to lie and cheat

Your values will guide you mission. Your mission is you lifetime goal, but it will evolve as you grow. You will have lifetime goals in various aspects of your life. You may have a goal to maintain a healthy life style, a goal to create a $100K yearly income, and a goal to fishing with your kids at least once a month.

Based on your mission you will determine the niche you want to work on for the next month.

Based on you lifetime goals, know what you want to accomplish in the next year, the next quarter, the next month, the next week and today.

Review your goals daily as you decide the most important thing you must accomplish today. Then do that one thing consistently each day. You may not complete it in the short time you have to work on it, but work on it daily and you be taking tiny steps closer to your life time goal.

Work in short blocks of time and take a break frequently. I set a timer for no longer than an hour. When the timer goes off I take a break. I may take a walk, wave my dumbbells around or go pull weeds in the garden. Then I may pick up where I left off or start something new. The first thing I do after reviewing may daily goals is the one most important thing in my life at that moment. I may only be able to work on it for 15 minutes but at least have have taken a tiny step forward toward my goals.

Procrastination is the killer of dreams.

Move forward everyday by consistently working on the most important thing in your life. One day it may be going to you kids soccer game. The next day it may be working on your website. Concentrate on the one most important thing in your life daily for a week and you will be surprised at your progress.

Each month, decide what you must do to complete your quarterly goals.

Each week, review what you will do to achieve your monthly monthly goals.

What will you do today that will move you forward towards accomplishing your weekly goals?

Review your accomplishments

Set your plans for tomorrow at the end of each day. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is the one most important thing you will work on today?(The task you must work on to more you a tiny step closer to you most important goal?)
  2. Which specific daily action(s) that relate to your goals did you work on?
  3. How Many Minutes did you spend on your A level task?
  4. What do you feel good about?
  5. What challenges did you have?
  6. Did you notice an negative self-statements?
  7. Any positive statements you used to replace the negative ones?
  8. How do you feel about your day on a scale of 1-10? (1 is a junk day– 10 it couldn’t have gone better.)
  9. What are your specific plans for tomorrow that will move you toward your 4 week goal?
  10. What did you learn today?

The first three questions relate to planning. Questions 4 – 8 are possibly the most important because they help you understand how you feel about what you did. Those questions can help you uncover hidden thoughts that may be sabotaging your efforts to move forward. Question 9 helps you start tomorrow right. Question 10 helps fix in your mind what lessons you learned from today’s experiences. What can you do better tomorrow based on what you learned today.

Live your life with purpose and work on accomplishing your purpose a little bit every day.  Don’t let the urgent things in your life crowd out the most important things in your life.

Have you ever thought about how to find a purpose in life? Perhaps you are one of those rare individuals who knows what is important to them and is on track to accomplishing the important things in there lives. Congratulations! When you understanding your core values you are looking into your soul.

Your values guide everything you do. They are your guide to understand what is most important to your life. If what you are doing is inconsistent with you values you need to take a look at what you are doing. Something has to change.

I’m not talking about you shiny new car or even your home. I’m talking about the values that form your personality.

Ben Franklin identified 13 things he valued in his life. Things like compassion, humility, temperance and loyalty. He would concentrate on improving one value for a week. Then he would move on to the next value and leave everything else to “their fair chance.”

It helped him develop good habits which served him throughout his life. His values also guided him in every decision he made in his life.

Reflect on your values daily. It is a form of mindfulness practice. Every evening reflect on what you accomplished during the day and why you did it. The “why” is more important than the “what” because the why keeps you on track toward your goals. When you know why you are doing something, you can decide if that activity should be continued.

When you know what is important to you in each part of your life you will understand what important thing you must be concentrate on today.

You can only do one thing at a time. Your todo list should be segmented into 3 categories.

“A” for tasks that lead to accomplishing those long term goals that are important in your life.

“B” tasks that are imposed on you by others.

“C” the rountine stuff of life that you need to block out time for but don’t need to schedule in your calendar.

The “B” and “C” stuff in our lives tend to overwhelm the “A” stuff yet the “A” stuff is the most important things in our lives. Schedule a half hour appointment with yourself every day to work on the most important thing in your life.

If the B and C stuff won’t let you schedule 30 minutes, schedule 15 minutes. Work on the most important thing in your life consistently every day and you will be surprised how much you get done by the end of the week.
